The growth of social fitness

Over the last five years, we have seen a real growth in what we term ‘social fitness’ in the UK. Many of us are guilty of becoming demotivated with the thought of going for a run or to the gym but when we know we are meeting a friend to do this exercise with, we are less likely to let a friend down and it’s more fun.

Research found that 64% of those who run, go to the gym or attend a group exercise class with friends would push themselves harder than if they went alone. The study also shows that 31% of women consider their friends to be the motivation they need to stay in good shape.

If you are anything like us, you will enjoy meeting your friends to exercise with because you spur each other on, it provides an incentive for both parties to take part and as well as training hard it means you can catch-up and treat the experience as a social event.

For the millennial generation, working out is becoming the new ‘going out’ and being fit and well is being looked up as ‘cool’. We have noticed a recent shift towards the importance of the ‘experience’ where individuals are looking for events that they can talk about on social media. Our recent event, Urban Movement, is a great example of this, as many people who attended were willing to give up their Saturday morning to workout with friends and meet other like-minded people in a fitness environment.
