Post-workout skincare

Breaking a sweat at the gym works wonders for your skin. As you towel yourself off your skin is busy releasing toxins, and boosted blood circulation gives it that healthy glow. But how do you continue that radiance post-workout?

Here are our top tips for keeping your skin looking gorgeous:

  1. Bare your skin. Lots of people wear makeup when they exercise. But this is a big no-no. Firstly, you’re not going to look great with streaky makeup. Secondly, blocking your pores with make-up and adding sweat and heat is the perfect recipe for blackheads.

  2. Ditch the kit. A lot of gym-goers stay in their sweaty clothes for too long after working out. Get out of your gym kit quickly to prevent dirt and sweat from your clothing sitting on your skin and blocking your pores. Gym acne, especially on the back and shoulders, is a very real condition.

  3. Steam up. Lots of people swear by a quick visit to the sauna or steam room immediately after their workout. The steam helps to deep cleanse your skin and eliminate toxins by opening up your pores. Plus it will help keep skin and hair hydrated.

  4. Clean up. Number one skin rule - whenever you break a sweat you need to wash your face and body afterwards to get rid of the dirt, sweat and grease. Keep your gym bag stocked with a face wash and moisturiser separate from your bodywash. No sink? Bring some facial wipes with you!

  5. Gently does it. Use a mild cleanser and shower gel, preferably with a pH value of 5.5. Bring cleaning wipes with you if that’s more convenient. Pat, don’t rub,  your face with a clean towel. Finish with a few splashes of cool water to help close your pores.

  6. Keep it cool. Resist the temptation to spend half an hour in a hot shower. This will strip your skin of vital oils leaving your skin feeling dry and uncomfortable.

  7. Moisturise your skin. Rehydrate your thirsty skin immediately after using the shower. Use a generous dollop of moisturiser on your face, and body lotion with a zingy scent to invigorate you!

  8. Keep hair off your face. Tying your mane back, during and after workouts will help keep oils off your face and prevent breakouts. Use a cotton scarf or sweat-wicking headband.

  9. Drink up. Hydrating your skin doesn’t stop on the outside. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids afterwards too. Water is the great choice, with many people opting for bottled mineral water. Chocolate milk might be a good option too, with past research finding milk hydrates at least as well as water. The bad news? Sugary sports drinks will do nothing for your skin, so steer well clear.

  10. Slap on the UV. As you head outdoors, don’t forget to carry on protecting your skin from the elements.
