You’ve done it. You’ve got yourself a flexible gym membership and now you can really start taking care of your fitness. The first few days at the gym, however, you may be feeling a bit lost or overwhelmed by all of your options.

Don’t compromise your gym day pass by sticking to the treadmill only for fear of trying anything else. Learn how to make the most of your time at the gym with these pro tips!


Make A Plan

Before you go to the gym, get an idea of what you want to work on that day. Cardio or strength? Are you looking to relax or go hard? Think about this before you enter the gym.

Then, when you get to the gym, head immediately to the equipment that will help you accomplish the goals. Stretch out here, and then get to work. When you have a plan in mind before entering the gym, you’ll spend less time thinking about what to do and more time exercising!


Incorporate HIIT Into Your Cardio

HIIT (high-intensity interval training) is known for its ability to rapidly improve your cardiovascular strength, and it’s proven to burn more fat. What better way to make the most of your time at the gym than incorporating some HIIT action?

Choose a piece of cardio equipment. Maybe you like the treadmill or the elliptical. Take 60 seconds to do low-speed exercise on the machine. Then, power hard for 30 seconds! Turn up the speed and push yourself to get through this short burst. Continue to alternate between low and high-intensity to get the most efficient workout.


Sign Up For A Class

Gym benefits don’t end on the gym floor. Many gyms offer lots of classes to their members, in everything from Zumba to group elliptical classes.

If you often find that you don’t know what to do at the gym, sign up for a few trial classes. Even if you don’t end up committing to any of the classes, you’ll learn more about what you could be doing at the gym, and you’ll be able to discover what types of exercises excite and energize you the most! After all, the key to doing the most efficient exercise is doing exercise that you enjoy, and with a flexible membership, there’s no need to commit to something that you’re unsure of.


Partner Up

If you’re still finding it difficult to stay motivated at the gym, find yourself a fitness friend. Whether it’s someone you’ve met at the gym or a long-time friend, ask each other what workouts you did and offer advice to one another about equipment to try.

Even if you aren’t taking things too seriously, this simple exchange will help motivate you to keep up with your workout. After all, you aren’t in it alone anymore!

Start carrying a water bottle around with you. Keep it at your desk or in your bag, and start by making sure that you drink one bottle of water per day. Gradually increase that to two, then three bottles of water per day.

Adding water to your diet will help your overall health tremendously. Water helps our muscles rejuvenate, keeps us from feeling tired, and helps us stop overeating. Just by adding water to your daily routine, you’ll start feeling healthier in no time.


2. Cut Back On Sugar

Sugary treats are delicious, but too much anything is a bad thing, and the same goes for sugar. Some people will recommend cutting sugar out of your diet entirely, but this can be very difficult for some people can cause them to stop trying to improve their lifestyle.

Rather than cutting out sugar entirely, try to cut back on sugar consumption. Do you often find yourself drinking empty calories in sweetened beverages? Reduce the number of these beverages over time, and you will be consuming less sugar. This will help you sleep better, be less irritable, and even lose a little weight!


4. Stop Stressing!

Many people set unrealistic diet and fitness goals for themselves and become very stressed when they don’t achieve their goals.

This stress is not good for your body or your brain, and it will only push you further from your goals! Instead, focus on realistic goals and real, meaning lifestyle changes. A focused approach to your exercise and fitness at the gym is one thing, but back up your flexible membership with a sensible, healthy way of living and you’ll really feel the difference in all aspects of your life!
