Stay active on rest days

Stay active on rest days

However rigorous your workout, you need to schedule rest days to give your body the chance to recover. However, it’s still beneficial to exercise your muscles gently in order to stretch them and avoid stiffening.

The only exercises you should consider on rest days are stretches and some light cardio such as the below:

Rest Day Stretching

There are all kinds of regular stretches you can do when you get up and before you go to bed. From yoga poses to standard reaching to your toes and triceps stretches, all give your muscles a bit of a shakeup and remind them they can’t completely concede to the DOMS from your last big workout.

If you have a standard warm up stretching routine this is a good option too, just make sure you don’t go into a full workout afterwards.

Rest Day Cardio

From basic bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges to a gentle jog or run, a little cardio lifts your heart rate and reminds your body that it’s still active. Swimming is a perfect rest day activity as is a gentle bike ride.

If you can’t stay away from the gym at least stay away from the heavy weights and high intensity sessions and instead opt for a Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi session.

Accepting your body needs a rest is essential to avoid injuries but you can always remain lightly active to keep those motivation levels high.
