If you’re exercising intensely then you need to be consuming the calories to support your output, so sometimes it’s best to focus on how much you’re moving and not worry about the calories.
Running for an hour at an average rate of 8mph will burn approximately 1,074 calories, a similar amount to skipping.
Swimming at a good pace will see you dropping 892 calories in an hour and high impact aerobics will lose you 664.
So given that the average recommended daily calorie intake for a man is 2,500 and a woman is 2,000, then just one hour of fast running could lose you almost half of those calories.
The key is to keep fuelled with good calories – and some of the highest calorific foods can also be some of the healthiest – avocados, nuts, oils, seeds. Ditch the high sugar foods, and eat as much as you need of the good stuff but focus on exercise.
If you keep moving, then you need to refuel and you don’t have to feel guilty about it.
With so many rules about what and how we should eat it’s good to be able to just focus on the amount of exercise you are doing.
Choose high intensity activities if you are looking for quick calorie burn, HiiT workouts, running, aerobics, tennis, swimming, and make sure you supplement with good stretching and gentle exercises to keep you supple like yoga and walking.
Keeping active will negate the need to keep fixating on calories. Win win!
it is basically energy in versus energy out, unfashionably simple as that may be. Calorie counting needs what in my opinion is an unhealthy obsession with exact amounts of food. Far better to do as the article says, eat properly and keep moving.
I am lucky enough not to have to worry about calories. Do people still do that? I thought the focus nowadays was on healthy, unprocessed food. Calorie counting is a really 80s thing.
