Some lucky people seem to maintain a slender physique with little effort at all while others only have to look at a bag of crisps to put on a pound. Genetics and body shape are clearly a factor. But are there more controllable factors too?
The good news is that researchers have tracked the habits of people who seem to keep weight off easily and have come up with three ways that they stay slim.
According to the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) 78% of successful dieters start the morning with breakfast. A morning meal is the best way to curb your appetite and control cravings. People who eat breakfast also tend to consume less calories during the day too.
Yes – you heard it right, you finally have official instructions to stop dieting! The truth according to the researchers is that successfully lean people rarely diet. Instead they select quality food that is both satisfying and nourishing, listen to their hunger cues, rarely eat out and limit screen time.
So ditch the scales, fill your plate with wholesome meals based around fruit, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains and limit your Netflix marathons.
You’ll get much further with your weight loss if you exercise regularly. Almost 90% of lean people in the NWCR exercise moderately for around 60 minutes most days of the week. This doesn’t have to mean daily slogs at the gym– anything that gets you moving will help shed extra pounds, so walk when you can and join a sports club.
Exercise is the thing for me. Everything seems to stem from that. if I exercise, I eat healthily and so the circle continues.
I work in an office full of serial dieters. I cannot convince anyone that a diet that works 'every time' is a diet that fails every time! Wise advice here.
Well, I eat breakfast and exercise a lot. I guess I'd better stop the dieting if I want to be slim. Seems very counter-intuitive but I do get the theory behind it.
