If you want to be your leanest you have to be alcohol-free, right? Wrong. 

There’s a lighter way of drinking that will allow you to enjoy a tipple without sacrificing your hard-earned muscles and fitness

There are plenty of ways to enjoy a guilt-free drink. Of course, we don’t need to remind you that moderation is key, but smart choices mean you can stay healthy and indulge in some refreshing beverages – essential in the summer heat!


Enjoying beer doesn’t have to mean a beer belly. You can choose lighter options, such as Bud Light which contains only 100 calories, 6.6g of carbs and 4.2% alcohol. Plus, so long as you’re able to limit yourself to one or two a day (not three, four or five) you will also benefit from the powerful antioxidants (phenols) in beer. Lager-fan? Order a Heineken, which clocks in at just 110 calories, 8.5g carbs.

Choose ale for the most phenol-boosting benefits, such as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with only 175 calories. Surprisingly, Guinness Draught is also a good choice for your toned torso, being phenol-rich and just 119 calories and 9.7g of carbs.


Wine fans needn’t worry. A glass of red is packed with the compound resveratrol, which has been linked to reducing cancer risk and inhibiting weight gain. Opt for pale reds like Pinot noir – they are kinder to your waistline than their full-bodied brothers like Cabernet sauvignon.

The drier whites, such as Pinto Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Reisling are great choices for those looking for lower-sugar drinks. The antioxidants in white wine have also been found to boost heart function.


Cocktails are off the menu, surely? Not necessarily. If you keep it simple, and limit the syrups, you can enjoy skinny summer cocktails and avoid packing on the calories.

Try making your own ‘skinny’ margarita: 1 ½ oz margarita, 3 tbsp lime juice, 3 tbsp orange juice, 1 tsp agave nectar and 1 lime wedge. Don’t forget to salt the glass edges!

If you want something really simple, order a vodka soda with lime. One shot of vodka, 4 shots of soda water and 1–2 limes contains only 75 calories and zero carbs!


While alcohol isn’t the healthiest thing to put in your body, a few relaxed drinks with friends can boost your well-being. Along with regular gym workouts, that is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy!
