With the Christmas party season well under way, chances are you’re going to feel a little worse for wear at some point. Rather than reaching for that fry up or cowering in bed all day, consider these healthy hangover cures instead.
Love it or hate it, the yeast extract spread works. One of the key reasons you feel a little delicate the morning after is because alcohol draws all the nutrients from your body and swallows them up and this includes the B vitamins that Marmite is known for. A lack of B vitamins can cause anxiety and depression and therefore lifting some of that low mood. Marmite is also high in sodium, replacing much of that which is lost through drinking alcohol. On toast is ideal as you also throw some carbs into the mix.
Your body’s blood sugar can dip significantly after a few drinks and this can lead to the weak and shaky feeling you get some mornings after a big night. Snack on watermelon, it’s high in fructose, as well as water which boosts hydration.
If too much alcohol leaves you feeling queasy and nauseous then the world’s best natural anti-emetic is for you. Ginger will help settle your stomach and reduce nausea and whilst chewing on in its natural form may not be an enjoyable experience, you could consider ginger tea or ginger lozenges.
We may have said a fry up isn’t your best option, but the eggs in that fry up are! Whether you scramble them, fry them or boil them they’re a wonderful source of protein which helps lift the serotonin levels in your body, great for raising your spirits. Eggs are also rich in amino acids which are central to fighting off the alcohol toxins which cause the hangover.
Above all else, drink water. Drink as much water as you can to flush out those toxins and ward off dehydration. Even if stomaching food is your worst nightmare, make sure you’re getting some water down.
these are really useful and not among the usual suggestions (never heard of watermelon curing a hangover). I'm buying some marmite too. But I think the best thing is just water and cheese on toast before bed.
a big glass of water before bed is also recommended. But as I get older, I find that the pain is really not worth the extra beer or two!
Love marmite. Now I have a good excuse to eat it, always getting ticked off for the salt. So eggs and marmite on toast, watermelon and a ginger and lemon tea. SOunds alright for breakfast
