Keep your liver healthy with a daily dose of tea or coffee

Whether it’s herbal, builders’ brew, or a cappuccino; tea and coffee has a whole host of benefits.

Caffeine offers some mental clarity. Tea and coffee is also thought to protect teeth, boost heart health, reduce risk of diabetes and defend against Alzheimer’s due to all those antioxidants packed in. 

Now a study has found that both tea and coffee can protect your liver from developing chronic disease. Published in the Journal of Hepatology, the study suggests that coffee has benefits on liver enzyme elevations, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer among other benefits.

2,500 took part in the Rotterdam Study in the Netherlands, where they were tested with liver scans, and given a survey questioning their habits on tea and coffee-drinking.

The study showed that those who frequently drank coffee had much lower odds of liver fibrosis, or less scarring of the liver, no matter where or how they lived. And those who drank any herbal tea at all also showed reduced risk of liver fibrosis in the analysis.

Some are skeptical about the results, but if you switch your fizzy and sugary drinks for tea or coffee then you are already making good health choices as reducing your sugar intake is better for your health all round.

Ensure you also incorporate plenty of water into your daily fluid intake to get the best health benefits.
