Is the avocado one of the most nutritious foods you can eat?

Is the avocado one of the most nutritious foods you can eat?

Avocados might be the colour of 70s bathroom suites, but recently they’ve been elevated to the epitome of fashionable ingredients.

Forget the retro pairing with prawns and Marie Rose sauce; now it’s all about smashing them on toast and adding ingredients like zataar, paprika, sumac and other exotic-sounding spices.

As we’re currently eating them by the bucket load, the question has arisen as to whether they are actually healthy for us.

The good news is yes, they are!

Packed with good fats, avocados can lower cholesterol and protect against wrinkles.

A variety of vitamins and minerals means they can help keep eyes healthy and regulate blood pressure.

Avos contain specific carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been shown to lower the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even prostate cancer.

High in vitamin E, avocados are a dream for the skin. Vitamin E has been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to protect against skin damages, this is why avocados are such good fodder for a radiant face.

On top of this, avocados contain good amounts of fibre, potassium, copper, vitamin B6 and vitamin K.

All in all, they are real food heroes.

But how many to eat on a weekly basis ? While they are tasty and packed with goodness, they are still high in fat so it’s important not to go too crazy on these green goodies.

Advice suggests half an avocado three to four times a week should give you the best benefits.

Long may the retro avocado reign supreme!
