How to beat the office career cake bulge

How to beat the office career cake bulge

Do you work in an office where there’s a constant stream of sweet treats on offer?

The Government has tried to raise awareness of the impact that office treats can have on the body, from expanding waist lines to serious diseases such as diabetes and chronic heart disease.

What’s crazy is that people know they shouldn’t eat sweets daily and yet it’s such an easy habit to get sucked into. Whether it’s Christmas, a Birthday, a charity bake sale or just a Tuesday, there always seems to be something available.

I am not forbidding the consumption of ‘treats’ but if you have a health or fitness related goal, eating a cake a day will more than likely hinder that goal. Goals vs taste are conflicting issues that can be hard to overcome.

One cake won’t hurt, just like one salad won’t make you the epitome of health. It is what you consistently do that you will become.

If every time there is cake you find yourself tucking in, it's time to take a step back and assess your choices.

How to refuse the treats

Saying no to the delights on offer can be a double whammy of bridges to overcome. Not only do you have to manage your own will power, but also manage everyone else encouraging you to eat.

When it comes to your own will power, think about the long term and how your choices affect that. Set easy achievable goals. You could start by cutting down from 5 cakes a week to 3 - that’s still a massive step!

Have your own snacks ready to replace the sweet treat on offer. It could be as simple as buying a bunch of bananas or bag of satsumas to have available for your team when that afternoon sugar crash happens. It might mean fewer biscuit purchases are made.

Sometimes it’s just about being part of it; if you can still eat with everyone else (even if it is an apple and some nuts) you can still be part of everything else that is going on.

Share your goals with your colleagues. This will lower the pressure on you to take part in chocolate spread Wednesdays and might even help others on their health journey.

Don’t be afraid to say no occasionally. It will do wonders for your health and will make the sweet things taste that little bit better when you do have them!
