Christmas is a comin’ and it’s all mince pies, mulled wine and too many Christmas dinner parties.

If you’re craving a healthy treat but want to stay in the Christmas spirit, here are some ideas that won’t put a damper on the festive season.

1. Chestnuts roasting....

The classic Christmas treat of roasted chestnuts is a great snack for those watching their weight or wanting to keep it healthier over yuletide. Lower in fat than walnuts or pecans, they are high in fibre, high in carbohydrate for slow-release energy and packed with B vitamins which help with red blood cell production. Chestnuts also contain the trace mineral manganese which acts as an antioxidant and is said to help reduce the risk of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. It’s also meant to help slow down the ageing process. I’ll have another bag please!

2. Open-top mince pies. 

Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be Christmas without these little chaps would it? Traditional mince pies are high in calories, made with buttery pastry and covered in icing sugar, but there is a way you can make them lighter and lower in fat. By simply leaving the pastry lid off your pies and grating in some fresh apple to your mincemeat mix, you are saving yourself calories and adding some much needed fresh fruit!

3. Mini trifles.

Topped with double cream, custard, jelly and cake, all manner of calorific goodies go into the average trifle. Make yourself the host with the most by making delicious snack trifles that won’t tip the scales. Take some ladies fingers or genoise sponge and layer at the bottom of a whisky tumbler, top with fresh raspberries and then add a layer of crème fraiche followed by a layer of tinned tangerine segments, another layer of the crème fraiche and top with honey. Looks like a trifle, but for a fraction of the calories!
