“What,” I hear you say, “is wheat germ?” Good question. It’s actually part of the wheat kernel that is removed when wheat is ground into flour, and it’s packed full of lovely vitamins, minerals and proteins that make us feel fab.
And why should you eat it? Well, not only is it the perfect breakfast foodstuff ( two tablespoons provides about 15 per cent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin E and 10 per cent of your daily folate) but it’s also one of the most easy things to sprinkle over pretty much any meal.
Wheat germ has been used to help fight malnutrition in developing countries – that’s how nutritious it is, and the high levels of vitamin E act as a natural antioxidant which can help fight a number of diseases including heart disease and cancer.
Great for digestion, wheat germ is full of fibre allowing toxins to be flushed from the body, and you know – fibre helps to keep you regular!
Wheat germ can also help with weight loss as it contains vitamin B which increases metabolism and helps the body burn calories.
Vitamin B is also known to boost energy levels so your concentration levels will be increased, meaning you’ll be able to work harder in the office.... and have more energy for that workout at the end of the day!
Who would have thought that those discarded bits of wheat could be so very healthy!

I make my own bread and often add a handful of wheatgerm to it, or roll in in it at the end.
It's very good fro you but not to be eaten by anyone with IBS (like myself) as it will exacerbate it - just a warning!
it's often the discarded bits of food which are the most healthy. Like molasses - isn't that the leftovers from refining sugar? That is why we need to eat the whole food and thankfully that is more available to buy nowadays.
I used to add wheatgerm to my porridge but just really couldn't get on with the flavour and texture, This article has reminded me of the benefits to wheatgerm. So maybe wheatgerm muffins or something else might be a good way to eat it.
such a shame it gets discarded from many products - we must be mad. I'm always on the lookout for wholewheat stuff because it is so good.
