10 of the best summer foods for weight loss

Ah, summer, filled with blissful barbeques and leisurely hours spent sipping cocktails (assuming we get some sun!). If you’re not careful, all that temptation can hamper any weight-loss attempts you might be making.

Thankfully, there are plenty of great tasting summer foods available. And the best bit? You can eat as much as you like of them!

Here are 10 of our favourites:

1.      Tomatoes

Sweet summer tomatoes taste of heaven. But if that’s not enough to tempt you, they also contain high levels of water and potassium – the perfect antidote to bloating, making you look even better on the beach.

2.      Grilled courgettes and aubergine

Vegetables are low in calories but high in fibre – perfect weight loss food. Drizzling them with oil and grilling on the BBQ brings out their unique flavours. Don’t forget to save some in the fridge to add to salads, pittas, pasta and frittatas.

3.      Alcohol-free ‘mocktail’

Though you can still enjoy skinny summer cocktails, an alcohol-free mocktail will better help your weight-loss plans. The combinations are endless, but going for pineapple-based drinks will help avoid the need to add too much extra sweetener.

4.      Limes

The tart juice of lime adds life to everything from salads to meat. This allows you to use it liberally to perk up the weight-loss food of your choice. Try squeezed over a fruit salad, or in a refreshing glass of sparkling mineral water.

5.      Grilled mangos and peaches

Love sweet desserts? Try grilling fruit such as mangoes, peaches, bananas and pineapple. It caramelises the sugars, making them even sweeter and taking indulgence to a whole new level. 

6.      Gazpacho

This chilled soup is usually made from cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, but you can use any blend of summer vegetables you like. Consuming a bowl will fill your belly with calorie-free water and fibre – taking the edge off your appetite and stop you overeating. 

7.      Watermelon

Containing more than 95 percent water and a surprising amount of fibre, this ruby fruit is hydrating as well as filling. It also contains good levels of the amino acid arginine, which is thought to help decrease body fat. Try a refreshing watermelon salad with feta, mint and olives.

8.      Avocadoes

Creamy and indulgent, avocadoes will fill you up with healthy monosaturated fats, whilst quelling hunger pangs and reducing belly fat.  Great diced in salads, you can also make your own guacamole dips, spreads and pesto.  

9.      Prawns

Low in fat but jam-packed with protein, prawns are a great weight-loss choice. Enjoy skewered marinated prawns on the BBQ then enjoy peeling them off and either toss into a summery salad or dipping into a tangy lime and yoghurt sauce.

10.  Frozen grapes

Keeping grapes (or cherries) in the freezer gives them a sorbet-like consistency, making them a refreshing treat in the summer heat. Frozen sliced banana is also a delicious but healthy option, helping you resist those choc-ices!
