Why does the gym make you feel hungry afterwards?

Why does the gym make you feel hungry afterwards?

When you’re burning calories, it stands to reason that you’ll feel hungry when you’re done.

But why do we feel extra ravenous when that session is over?

Using up your glycogen stores while you exercise means your appetite is stimulated, but there are other factors that play out when hunger strikes.

Perhaps you didn’t fuel up as well as you should have before you started. And you need to consider when you eat post-workout to get the benefits of refueling your body properly.

Before a gym session, make sure you hydrate well throughout the day, and eat enough to sustain your workout.

Sometimes when you’re hungry you might just be thirsty. Take on some more water and see if you still feel hungry after that.

Eat about an hour before you go out – a bowl of porridge, or a banana with peanut butter. Something that fills you up, but not too heavy.

Then when you’re done at the gym, you need to eat again within 30-60 minutes. Not eating within this window means that you’ll find yourself hungrier throughout the rest of the day.

Carbs and protein need to be the main component of your post-workout food. If it’s a high intensity workout, you’ll need more carbs than protein, and a blend of fruit and high fibre foods for optimal results.

Eating more isn’t a bad thing, as long as you’re burning the calories in the right way.

Rather than thinking about dieting, think of it as getting the correct nutrition.

Eating more of the right stuff is good! And being hungry after exercise is normal.
