What is to blame for weight gain?

When you gain weight or struggle to lose weight, do you automatically cut back on the calories? You might be better off upping the exercise and changing your lifestyle.

According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine  too much slouching around is the real cause of weight gain - not what we eat.

As a nation we’re getting way less physical activity than we did 20 years ago, while our calorie intake has stayed pretty much the same. This coincides with an increase in average body mass index and waist circumference.

So take a good look at your lifestyle, physical activity as well as your diet. Here are our top tips:

Keep a food and exercise diary 

Many people are surprised by how much they eat and exercise in a week. Online trackers like My Fitness Pal are great for a fun, honest look at this.

Women – be warned!

The study found young women aged 18-39 were particularly affected by drops in leisure activity over the past 20 years. There were significant increases in national waist circumference and average BMI, while there’s been little change in calorific consumption.

Tackle abdominal fat

Too much belly fat is a health risk for anyone but certain exercises help tackle it effectively. Even one hour of exercise a week can help. According to Australian researcher Dr Steve Boucher dieting alone is not helpful because it slows metabolism down.

Exercise, exercise, exercise 

Regular activity not only helps you lose weight, it also keeps it off and gives numerous health benefits beyond weight issues.

More sleep, less stress 

Fast-paced modern lifestyles affect the hormones our bodies generate. This includes cortisone and insulin, the ‘anti-fat burning hormones’.  So it’s really not about dieting. It’s about adopting lifestyles changes.

Good health is simple. Exercise regularly, eat sensibly and enjoy life.
