WHAT EXERCISES ARE BEST DURING PREGNANCY?

WHAT EXERCISES ARE BEST DURING PREGNANCY?

Pregnancy. Time for bed rest? Nope. It’s all about staying as fit and mobile as possible, for as long as possible.

Easier said than done, but it will pay off when the big day arrives. And beyond.

FIRST TRIMESTER – BUSINESS AS USUAL

For the first three months, keep doing what you have been doing as long as you feel up to it (also helps if you aren’t ready to share the news!)

Chances are you’re feeling tired. And sick too probably. Be gentle on yourself. Your body is working hard 24/7.

If you are new to exercise, early pregnancy is a great time to start walking, pregnancy yoga, pilates or swimming. Gym work such as squats and light weights are also good.

Don’t forget your pelvic floor exercises . The muscles that you can’t see are REALLY important now.

SECOND TRIMESTER - CRUISE MODE

With luck, any morning sickness will have eased and you’ve got more energy. Stop doing crunches and standard planks as your abdominal muscles are softening. That said, side planks and bird dogs are fine to keep core strength up. Expect to breathe a bit harder as your bump starts to take up space.

THIRD TRIMESTER – COUNTING DOWN

In full sail? Take the weight off with a swim. Make the most of spare moments with quick gentle stretches. Supported squats, light weights (practice baby lifting!) and short walks are all good as you count down to D-day.

ANY PREGNANCY EXERCISE NO-NOS?

Your changing shape can make balance a problem, so switch a road bike for a stationary one. Also avoid flat-on-your-back exercises, as these can impede blood flow.

Check with your doctor if in doubt, and go at your own pace. Everyone is different, never more so than when expecting.

Work, gym, real life, new life. Life gets busy but with a little Hussle you can stay fit and enjoy that pregnancy glow. And don't forget to do those pelvic floor exercises!
