Training for a challenge. Give your workout a purpose

Signing up for an event is a great way to set yourself some hard and fast training goals. Having a reason and a deadline to improve your fitness, strength and stamina will make you more inclined to commit to an exercise routine and a training plan.

We’ve found some of the toughest, as well as some of the most fun, runs, races, bike rides and endurance events in the UK to help you choose your next challenge.

Tough Mudder
A 12 mile obstacle course; Tough Mudder will test your endurance, stamina, fitness and strength, leaving you exhausted and covered in a thick layer mud. The ethos of Tough Mudder is not to finish the fastest, but to work as a team and overcome the challenging course together.

London Marathon
The London Marathon is so popular that the ballot closes over 12 months in advance. Yes, we said ballot. Held in April each year the Marathon starts in Greenwich and finishes in St James’ Park, taking in some of London’s most famous sites.

Race for Life
The UK’s largest women-only fundraising event, Race for Life runs 5 and 10k events all over the UK from May to October, as well as Pretty Muddy, a 5k obstacle course in the mud. The event supports Cancer Research UK.

London to Paris Bike Ride
5 days. 500km. The London to Paris Bike Ride is a fundraising challenge that takes place twice a year. Departing from London, travelling through the French country side and into the heart of Paris, it’s a pleasant, but challenging ride that finishes with a day of sightseeing in Paris - if you can still walk after 5 days of cycling.

A Yoga fun run might sound a bit weird, but that’s the idea behind Gloanna, a 5k run that starts with a shot glass of Prosecco and ends with a 45 minute Yoga class and sushi brunch.

London to Brighton Night Ride
Hosted by the British Heart Foundation, the London to Brighton Night Ride is a 65 mile cycle from Tower Bridge to Brighton Beach. The race begins around midnight, so that you arrive in Brighton just in time to see the sunrise over the pier.

Survival of the Fittest
The Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest is a 10k urban assault course, packed with obstacles, mud and thousands of competitors. Contrary to its name, this event isn’t only about coming out on top; you can enter solo, or as a team. And once you’re all done, you can hit the beer tent to fulfil the event’s motto: Mud, Sweat and Beers. 

Sumo Run
The Sumo Run is a 5 kilometre charity fun run, which you complete in an inflatable sumo suit. While you may not be able to run this 5k (it will be more of a wobble we expect) you will definitely have a lot of laughs as you make your way around the course.

Oxfam Trailwalker
100 kilometres, 30 hours, and three teammates. The Trailwalker challenge is no running race, but a test of endurance, teamwork and determination. And if that’s not enough of a challenge for you, you could always try the Trailtrekker, which takes place in the remote and rocky Yorkshire Dales.
