Most people haven’t considered the environmental impact of their trainers. But it’s Earth Day on April 22nd so we thought it’s time to look at planet-saving footwear.

Each shoe produced in the world creates 30 pounds of carbon dioxide, and Nike sell 25 pairs of trainers a second. That’s a lot of damage that could be avoided.

But while eco trainers sound great, are they going to perform well and look stylish? Thankfully more companies are getting a green conscience, so you can put your best foot forward whilst benefitting the earth.

Here is our top three eco-trainers on the market right now:


A sock-like trainer made from ocean waste and nets, these are very stylish, comfortable and have enough cushioning to support you pounding pavements, making them a good choice for running. Adidas are producing 11 million pairs this year so these shoes are clearly popular. The back does come up high so you might need longer socks, but that’s pretty much the only con to these earth-friendly knitted trainers.


You’d have to be living under the sea not to know about the harm plastic is doing to our planet. These shoes are made from recycled PET so stops plastic waste entering landfill. However, these trainers are like going barefoot so need some getting used to. Your feet spread out more naturally and they will probably feel more tired after your first few runs. But they wash easily, are great for travelling, and you will reap the benefits of barefoot running,


Allbirds make shoes from either eucalyptus trees or merino wool. The soles are made from sugar cane and the shoes laces made – incredibly – from recycled plastic bottles. Not only that, their packaging uses 90 percent recycled cardboard.

These heavenly trainers are comfortable enough to wear all day long and the breathable wool means your feet stay fresh. They’re a cool charcoal which also looks great. However, their light cushioning may not give quite enough support for some people, and the grip is not the best. So perhaps use as a light gym option, or just keep them for top-comfort travelling.
