We all want to look and feel our best all the time, but sometimes a deadline works wonders. With summer holidays approaching, it is a good time to improve fitness and  lose those few excess pounds.

Try these 5 ideas to get you in better shape in time for your holiday.

1.CHECK THOSE EATING HABITS

After one of the worst UK winters in years, we can’t be blamed for getting into comfort eating. If the cake and takeaway levels have crept up during the long dark months, take some action now.

2.DRINK MORE WATER

Fizzy drinks, smoothies, luxury coffees and alcohol may seem thirst-quenching, but they are a big source of hidden calories. Lose these and you have an easy win to losing some pounds as well.

3.DO SOME CARDIO

There’s nothing like cardiovascular exercise for burning up calories, as well as improving your overall health. The recommended weekly target is 75 minutes of cardio, which means just one exercise class and a brisk uphill walk. Easy!

4.DO SOME STRENGTH WORK

This is just as important as your cardio work. The targets are set for long-term health and strength, but you will also see visible results in a few weeks. All you need to do is about twelve repetitions of something that means you have to stop at that point. Personalise the lifting, planks or push-ups to your ability. Then push yourself a bit more and you will start to tone up.

5.GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Working out is only half of the recipe for toned muscles. The other half is letting those muscles recover and rebuild. That means alternating workouts to give muscles a rest, and making sure you get that rest. Make time for sleep, banish the gadgets from the bedroom and create the best environment for that vital shut-eye.
