We are bombarded with advice and ideas for healthy eating. With a new diet or ‘superfood’ almost every day, it can feel a bit overwhelming. Fortunately there is really no need to overcomplicate matters. Here are five tips for a happy and healthy approach to food.
Don’t think of any food as bad or ‘naughty’. We need fat in our diet. The important thing is not to have too much, and that applies to any type of food.

The recommendation for fruit and veg has recently increased from five a day to ten a day. While it doesn’t have to be fresh, too much processing reduces nutrition. Aiming for ‘zero processed’ would mean raw food only, so there’s no need to be too extreme. Just try to keep things simple.
Fresh local fruit and veg can’t be beaten for taste and nutrition. Make like our friends in the Mediterranean and eat with the seasons. The right veg at the right time is more nutritious and tastes so much better.
TV dinners, fast food and eating on the run are all a bad idea. Food that we don’t really notice tends to be forgotten. It is also a shame not to give good food the attention it deserves. So turn off the screens when you are eating. If there is someone around to join you at dinner, share the experience and add some real world socialising.
also guilty as charged - TV dinner has become rather a fact of life. As long as it is the right food, I think it is ok.
I know that we're meant to pay attention to when we eat, but one of my real pleasures is eating whilst watching tv. It's a complete indulgent switch-off. But I don't have weight problems, so I don't see it as a problem.
