5 ways to boost your metabolism

5 ways to boost your metabolism

We get our energy from the food and drink we consume, but the calories are converted into energy by our metabolism.

Many factors can determine our metabolic rate; gender, age and body shape. There are ways to help the metabolism run a little faster however. Meaning you’ll burn off that chocolate bar in a much quicker time!

1. Always remember breakfast

Kick-start your metabolism with a good healthy breakfast. Not everyone feels like food first thing in the morning, so snack on something small like a banana or a bowl of natural yoghurt.

2. Drink water and green tea

Both of these hydrators are great for the metabolism. Drinking plenty of water is a relatively easy way to speed up digestion and the aim is to drink eight glasses a day. When it comes to green tea, it’s naturally caffeine-free and counted as a superfood, it packs in the antioxidants as well as speeding up metabolism.

3. Eat for a higher metabolic rate

Who knew that eating could speed up the metabolism? Well if you choose your foods wisely, you can help your system burn calories. Try chillies, tuna and grapefruit (not necessarily at the same time!) Also remember that protein helps to boost the metabolism so try eggs at breakfast to double your metabolic efficiency.

4. Work out

You knew it was coming! Weights can help with speeding up your resting metabolic rate, so start lifting those dumbbells.

5. Sleep

Thought you’d like this one…. A lack of sleep has been linked to slower metabolisms, so if you’re serious about boosting your calorie burning power, then ensure you get a good amount of shut eye every night. Eight hours is the optimal amount for adults, although many can get by on seven.
