Enjoying a cocktail this summer shouldn’t be off limits simply because you’re watching your calorie intake. There are plenty of fresh, flavourful and enjoyable cocktails out there which are ideal for a low calorie diet or in fact, for you to enjoy simply because you prefer a slightly healthier option.

Of course the calories in alcohol are higher than your average drink. We’ve previously looked at how alcohol can affect your fitness levels and performance too. However, enjoying a cheeky summer drink or two is still something many of us enjoy when the sun comes out.

Here are three fresh and fruity skinny summer cocktails for you to try out:

Pina Colada Lite

The Pina Colada is known for its decadent and rich, creamy flavour so how can it possibly be a healthy choice? This light recipe allows you to enjoy your favourite creamy pineapple flavours without the calories. Each Pina Colada Lite contains just 72 calories.

For a single glass you will need:

  • 20g fat free Greek yoghurt
  • 20ml skimmed milk
  • 30g cubed pineapple
  • 20ml coconut cream
  • 50ml of your chosen white rum
  • Ice to serve

Simply pop all the ingredients in your blender and mix them together to create a creamy pineapple cocktail with a kick but no calorie overload.

Low Carb Cosmo

The sweet sharpness of the cranberry in a Cosmopolitan makes you instantly think of summer. It’s a fun and vibrant cocktail but it’s usually packed with sugar because of the cranberry juice used. Here’s one way of enjoying the same fresh flavour without the sugary carb-heaviness. Each low carb Cosmo has around 105-115 calories.

For a single glass you will need:

  • 50ml your chosen vodka
  • 75ml unsweetened cranberry juice (or diet cranberry juice if this is unavailable)
  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • 50ml water or soda water if you fancy some fizz
  • 50ml of agave nectar or your chosen sweetener to replace sugar

Minty Fresh Non-Alcoholic Sweet Tea

Iced tea is one of the absolute essentials of the summer but rather than buying it in a can or a bottle, where it’s full of artificial ingredients, try making your own for a refreshing non-alcoholic drink. Each glass of this summer fresh minty sweet tea has no calories at all.

For eight servings (pitcher jug) you will need:

  • 4-6 tea bags
  • 1.5 litres of water
  • Crushed Ice
  • Lemon Wedges
  • 4-6 large mint leaves

Place your teabags and mint leaves into a large pitcher and add the water, allow the tea to stand and brew for 2-3 hours at room temperature or in the sun. Remove the tea bags and serve over ice with lemon wedges for additional flavour freshness.
