SWEET TOOTH? TRY THESE SWEET ALTERNATIVES

Pack of sweets in the house? Can you eat just one? We thought not. Same goes for a chocolate bar.

Too much sugar is bad for waistline, teeth and general health. So we all need to look for alternatives. Be a bit careful, though, as there’s a lot of bad science out there. For example, there’s not much point switching to honey from sugar, when honey has more calories weight for weight than sugar does.  Same goes for maple syrup and similar.

Keep it real with these alternatives to the sweets and choc.

BAKED APPLE

Fruit may contain fruit sugar, but it is well wrapped in lots of other nutrition. The fibre in fruit also fills you up and stops you eating too much. (That’s why care is needed with smoothies or dried fruit, where the loss of the fibre makes it all too easy to overdo it).

Core a few large eating apples (use the potato peeler, just push it through!) and stuff with a small amount of a mix of butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and crushed walnuts. A little really does go a long way. Bake in a hot oven for about 45 mins. Eat either warm or cold for a filling sweet treat.

TRAIL MIX

This is the robust, portable and tasty snack used by distance walkers and runners.  Recipes vary wildly but usually include raisins, nuts and granola.Add a bit more dried fruit and maybe a FEW small bits of chocolate and there it is. Make your own and you can control ingredients, but remember to savour rather than scoff!

RICE CAKES AND FRUIT SPREAD

Cheer up a rice cake with a topping of fruit spread. Never heard of it? Like jam but with far less sugar, these spreads are sweetened with apple juice so give a much lower calorie hit.

Finally, don’t forget the old mind over matter. If you want a sweet treat, wait half an hour and see if you can do without it.
