White vegetables may not look that interesting to eat, but recent research shows that they are definitely something to get excited about. Make it a white Christmas this year, with or without snow!
The study, from a Chinese University, found that eating white vegetables like potatoes, white cabbage, cauliflower and onions could cut the chance of contracting stomach cancer by a third. Good news if you’re partial to a plate of spuds!
Eating a wide range of fruit and green-yellow veg like kale, cabbage and celery were among other vegetables to have a protective effect.
The research was drawn from 76 studies and involved 6.5 million participants and 33,000 deaths from gastric cancer.
Meanwhile, a diet high in salt, pickles, processed meats, beer and spirits has been linked to a higher risk of stomach cancer.
Stomach cancer is one of the most common, accounting for around 10% of all cancers and killing 15 people every day. Evidence is mounting that diet is strongly associated.
Both white vegetables and fruit are rich sources of vitamin C. It’s believed that that vitamin C acts as an antioxidant again cellular stress in the stomach. The Chinese research found that eating 50mg of vitamin C daily reduces stomach cancer risk by 8%.
Vitamin C also fights a bacterium which is believed to cause stomach cancer.
It’s pretty simple to get more vitamin C from white vegetables. Just one cup of cooked cauliflower or two medium potatoes will give you 50mg.
