i have followed a mainly mediterranean diet for years and it makes me feel very healthy, plus I do not put on weight if I combine it with regular exercise. But the main thing is you know you're eating really well which makes you feel mentally good too.
It's very easy to stay trim if you've got an active job and plenty of money, I think it's harder with a desk job (like me) and not a big salary (like me) which means you can't a afford to eat a healthy diet so easily.

As I understand it, the Mediterranean diet isn't a diet, it is lots of tasty food! No-one ever got fat eating too many vegetables, so eating this way doesn't feel restrictive. Hence no failure as with all the fad diets.
