Swimming is the perfect exercise. It engages every muscle group, develops your aerobic fitness, helps fix injuries – and all you need is water!

But just like the big blue sea, the benefits of swimming go deeper than what’s on the surface.

So take a deep breath. Here's a headfirst dive into the benefits of swimming:

1. BUILDS MUSCLE STRENGTH ALL OVER

Have you ever gazed in awe at the bodies of Olympic swimmers? They’re a great example of the results of tough swimming training. Ok, a few laps of the local pool won’t bring such great results – but swimming quickly develops all over muscle strength with visible results. 

2. BURNS SERIOUS CALORIES

Lap swimming burns a respectable 470 calories per hour. But when it’s taken seriously, you can blast your way through calories. Even breaststroke when done effectively burns up to 700 calories an hour. Despite being slower, it uses your large leg muscles to push you along. And it can be a lot more fun than pounding on the treadmill for hours.

3. IMPROVES BREATHING EEFFICIENCY

As land-creatures, it’s no surprise we humans feel out of breath when we swim underwater. But regular swimming will improve your breathing efficiency and overall lung condition.

Swimming builds a stronger heart which will pump more blood with each contraction. Your lungs learn to absorb more oxygen, and muscles in your diaphragm that control your breathing also get stronger. 

4. GREAT FOR FLEXIBILITY

All that reaching, pulling twisting and stretching is great for your flexibility. Your ankles are stretched with every kick against the liquid pressure of water. And the wide range of motion help lengthens your muscles in a way that makes joints recover and less susceptible to injury.

5. GREAT FOR A MENTAL BREAK

Swimming is a great way to escape from the hectic, noisy pace of life. No cars, no machinery, no technology. Just you and the water. It’s a safe place where you can mentally shut off and de-stress.

Stressed? Try jumping into cold water. Apparently, this can help you beat the blues by triggering a stress response. Do it regularly and it may help reduce your chronic stress response to modern life.
