Too much partying? How to keep your hangover in check

It’s inevitable – even with the best will in the world, the temptation to have a drink over the Christmas season and into the New Year will get the better of some us.

Although there are no sure fire ways to “cure” a hangover, there are some ways that you can feel better after having a drink or two, and ways to prevent feeling awful in the first place.

Here are our best hangover cures for the party season:

1. Prepare to party

Line your stomach. Eat a meal that incorporates carbohydrates like pasta or rice, or fats – all this will help to slow down the body’s absorption of alcohol.

2. Keep it clear

Avoid dark-coloured drinks as they contain natural chemicals called congeners, which irritate blood vessels and the tissue in the brain, all of which can make a hangover far worse than it needs to be. Keep topped up with water as well during your drinking session, and then again don’t forget to have a pint of water before bed.

3. Replenish

Replace lost fluids and salts by eating something rehydrating like a thin vegetable-based broth. Full of vitamins and minerals, it’s both easy to digest and restorative. Try sugary food if you’re feeling trembly, but you may need an antacid first so you can handle it. Soda water or an isotonic drink may help to settle your stomach.

4. Avoid a relapse

“Hair of the dog” may sound appealing when you’re not as perky as you could be, but drinking more the following day will not help with your recovery. The advice from GPs is that you wait at least 48 hours before drinking anything else.

5. Know your limits

If you’re going to drink, at least know when to stop. This will prevent health issues later on and will keep you feeling chipper.  Men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis, and spread your units over three or more days if you do drink this much. Try and cut down to several drink-free days each week.
