Hussle-er Mike Essex contacted us recently to let us in on a big achievement, his selection in the Great Britain triathlon team for the World Championships.
The most impressive part of his news? He has managed to gain a place on the team not as a professional athlete, but as a full-time employed, father of two. With a lot of planning, hard work and dedication, Mike’s been able to balance his demanding career in London, his young family, and a training schedule that has led to him representing Team GB.
I’m happily married to Emel, and father to two girls; Zara 7 and Yasmin 3. I work for Price Waterhouse Cooper as a cultural and behavioural change specialist, helping companies improve their office culture.
The Thames Turbo. It took place on a stormy bank holiday weekend in 2008, I competed with a borrowed bike, in a t-shirt and shorts.
By my mid 30s I had stopped playing team sports yet was still keen to train and keep in shape. Triathlons seemed to be a great way of having a variety of sports to train for and I could realistically fit the training around work and family commitments
I first stepped into a gym aged 15 at school where we had a very basic ‘multi gym’ so that means I have been a regular user for 25 years now!
My work is project based with a variety of clients so Hussle is perfect as I have the flexibility of finding a gym near to my temporary work location
I train 6 days a week, 8 – 12 hours per week.
A typical training week for me which I will use up until Edmonton is:
Monday PM: Coached lake swim
Tuesday: Bike to and from work (28km each way)
Wednesday AM: Hussle – weights / stretch / cardio
Wednesday PM: Running – coached track session
Thursday: Bike to and from work
Friday: Bike to and from work
Saturday: Mock Tri:1 hr lake swim, 45 min bike, 20 – 40 min run
Sunday: REST and family time!
All triathlon courses are different so depends on the course! My 5km run PB is 18:06 which I ran in June this year – not too bad for a 40 year old!
You cannot beat a lake swim on a summer evening – very relaxing and beautiful
I use music when working out in the gym and in the hour prior to the race to get me fully focussed and in the zone. Favourite track is ‘Feel this moment’ by Pitbull
My two mottos in life are ‘never, ever give up’ and ‘be the best you can be’
I love Turkish meze and fresh whole fish
Best of luck to Mike and the rest of Team GB!
They'll be competing in Edmonton, Canada, from 26th August – 1st September.
Great to hear from Mike. And great to read how your training schedule fits around your home and work too. Inspiring, to say the least.
